Information was seen as a vital central force for maquaculture to be successful. This success would assist in developing local availability of aquarium species should certain species cease to be available to hobbyists and public aquaria from the wild or in the quantities we have come to rely upon.
A database, or "registry," was developed to document individual aquarist observations about spawning behaviors, larval rearing, and general husbandry. Comparison of these reports helps both amateur and professional breeders identify common or typical behaviors, ranges for physical water quality parameters, and larval feeding strategies. By studying multiple reports, a "profile" for each species may be constructed.
The strength of the database is constantly being built upon through the advances of the participating breeders. What one individual has achieved may be duplicated or improved upon by those who follow. What may have been thought of as significant by one breeder might be found to be less so by another.
